STRENGTHS: Dedicated, intelligent, empathetic
Dedicated
Primarily this is something that shows when he actually puts his mind to something, whether it's something serious or particularly ridiculous. It doesn't matter at the end of the day, one he's set on it he will do everything in his power to make sure whatever it is gets done and no one can tell him differently. It also tends to tie in with him being empathetic and loyal to a fault as well. Primarily that if something he can do to help someone comes around, he will set his mind to making sure it gets done.
Intelligent
This is way more in the book smarts category than it is anything else, because personality wise he's kind of actually entirely oblivious and kind of dumb. But when it comes to actual academics, he's only really beaten in canon by Kyouya which, well, it's Kyouya and he's ridiculous intelligent compared to any other character in the series. Despite his ridiculous exterior, Tamaki actually is a really good student in the end of it. He's also something of a virtuoso when it comes to the piano, oddly.
Empathetic
This boy has this in spades, any time there is someone in trouble or upset, he's one of the first people to notice and tries to help in whatever way he possibly can. He also tends to be way more aware of everyone else's feelings instead of his own, which honestly just fits for him, as he shows time and time again in the series that even while helping others he's completely oblivious to his own emotions. (The best example being just his feelings towards Haruhi, the most oblivious thing that doesn't come around fully until near the end of the series, mistaking it as a familial bond instead of the romance it actually is.)
FLAWS: Naive, outspoken, dramatic
Naive
Oh this is probably one of the most obvious things, simply because he's naive in a number of ways. The first one is being naive towards anything that isn't considered "upper class" or "rich". "Commoner" things, as he dubs them, completely allude him and also oddly fascinate him for whatever reason. He's also naive towards his own feelings the majority of the time and for a teenager, he comes off a good bit younger than he actually is simply due to this naive nature.
Outspoken
As far as outspoken goes, it tends to be a little different, mostly in the sense that he gets that way normally when there's some sort of wrong that his been committed. It's just something of an affront to him and it doesn't really matter if it's someone close to him or a stranger, he just won't stand there for it. But it also is just his nature in general to be loud in most of what he does, whether it's speech or in appearance.
Dramatic
Dramatic flair is the sign of a good actor and given the host club is made to entertain bored girls, Tamaki is overly dramatic to the point of absurdity. Everything he does tends to be overly animated and louder than it ever needed to be. Whether it's clothing, his way of speech, or his actions, it's all made to look like an over the top theatrical event. It tends to bleed into even his every day life, too.

AU BACKSTORY:His backstory is about the same as canon re: his existence and the whole ordeal with his mother and moving places. HE'LL BE PRETTY STOKED ABOUT COMING BACK TO FRANCE, ACTUALLY.
So basically he'd been training and going to regular school (hahaha, regular rich school, it is still Ouran Academy) by his Japanese side of the family as they're all a pretty prestigious mage clan as well as businessmen in various capabilities. But of course, Tamaki being Tamaki, has other stupid frivolous nonsense he wants to do instead. Which leads him more towards taking a keen interest in the illusion side of things and using it for his club at his school at the time which does a great job of convincing people to his ridiculous cause or whatever?
Of course with Nightfall being a Thing and his grandmother Very Clearly wanting them to be involved for totally not prestige purposes, he's being shipped from his place in Japan (and his friends, dammit) to Daybreak to learn something actually useful.
But Tamaki being Tamaki, he's probably not going to really Get that it's to make him Competent and instead think it's to hone is current abilities to be even more over-the-top and frivolous.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Honestly there's literally nothing different here.
RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: OH BOY. So he's a mage and from two different mage families. One being the Suou family and the other being the de Grantaine family. Though the latter kind of fell on harder times.
POWERS: So basically Tamaki's whole nonsense is more in the wheelhouse of illusion-based shenanigans, usually used in connection to his own Extremely Extra personality. Making rose petals appear during a dramatic moment? Absolutely. Making lights from nowhere for dramatic effect? Yep. In theory this could be used to confused and distract an opponent, but given he Literally Does Not Think That Way, it's more he needs to be reined in to figure out how this stuff really works.
